The Difference between Commercial and Residential Carpentry Services

11 March 2021

Carpentry services primarily deal with the maintenance and repair of interior and exterior components of a property. Some areas that they cover include windows, doors, walls, floors, decorative mouldings, ceilings, countertops, and handrails. But aside from maintenance and repair, carpentry services can also occasionally conduct tasks like construction, relocation, assembly/disassembly, and installation.

To date, there are two types of carpentry services that you can hire. One of these types is a commercial carpentry service. This type of service essentially works with properties that are intended for commercial facilities and establishments, which all cater to businesses. The second type would be the residential carpentry service. It typically caters to properties that are intended for the people to live in.

While they basically do the same things, these types of carpentry services have some notable differences in some key areas and aspects. Some of the differences between the two are as follows:

Construction Materials

A lot of building materials that are being used for both carpentry services can be similar. However, commercial carpentry services tend to use more building materials since commercial buildings often need more support and cover much more area compared to most residential buildings. And compared to the residential ones, commercial buildings likewise need stronger and more durable materials such as steel just to keep everything intact and stable. Residential carpentry services, alternatively, can already work with timber materials due to the smaller framework of residential properties.

Tools and Equipment

As previously mentioned, commercial buildings have to be serviced out of durable materials. Additionally, they have a bigger form factor and more complex design compared to the residential buildings, which would directly translate to more efficient tools and equipment. One similarity, however, between the two is that they both need all the appropriate tools and equipment. Without acquiring them, the entire carpentry services might be compromised, leading to property damages and injuries.

Permits and Codes

Another prominent area that is not truly similar between the two carpentry services is the regulations associated with their works. Commercial carpentry services are known to have stricter regulations compared to residential ones due to the amount of work that is associated with them. Additionally, since commercial properties are filled with complex structural designs and contain more rooms and spaces, the need for additional permits would be certainly recommended. Even the rules and regulations regarding electrical and plumbing systems, design, and others are much more complicated with commercial properties than the ones dedicated to residential properties.

Total Cost Differences

One great difference between residential and commercial carpentry services is their total costs. The materials used by the commercial carpentry services are known to be more expensive than the ones used by residential carpentry services. Commercial carpentry services likewise have to conduct all works faster and more efficient, which can be equated to more workers. The permits and regulations needed for the services can also be costly for commercial ones.
